Small, large, white, milk or dark chocolate: Easter chocolates are a delight for young and old people every year. Did you know that chocolate is the most consumed product during this long weekend? More than 85% of Canadians consume chocolate according to 2021 data. Canadians enjoy chocolate more than ham! If you are like us at Ricova and are trying to reduce your environmental footprint, it is worthwhile to pay special attention to the packaging of Easter chocolates. Easter chocolate packaging is diverse and sometimes contains multiple materials. You have to be careful!

Cardboard and aluminum foil: the best choices!

Easter chocolate packaging made of cardboard and aluminum foil should be at the top of your list when it’s time to choose your sweet treats. Indeed, cardboard is a material that can be recycled very well: it is reduced to paper pulp and transformed again. Sorting centers in Quebec, such as Ricova, are able to make very high quality bales. Just unpack the boxes and put them in your recycling bin and you’re done!

As for the aluminum Easter chocolate wrappers, simply roll them up and make a ball out of them before putting them in the recycling bin. The larger the aluminum ball, the more likely it is to be captured in the sorting centers and recycled. You can also enclose it in a larger item made of aluminum as well. Aluminum is infinitely recyclable since it does not lose its properties when melted.
