Among them, the emblematic figure of zero waste, author and blogger B\u00e9a Johnson. She made this practice known by publishing the book <a href=\"https:\/\/zerowastehome.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Zero Waste Home<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, which became a best-seller and was translated into more than 40 languages. The author tells how she and her family managed to reduce their waste to less than one kilogram per year (compared to an average of 700 kilograms for a Quebecer).<\/p>\n<p>The original definition of \u201czero waste\u201d was subsequently revised by the <a href=\"http:\/\/zwia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>ZWIA<\/strong><\/span><\/a> Board in December 2018 to align with the guiding principles of zero waste global strategy.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-22890f8 elementor-blockquote--skin-boxed elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"22890f8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t\u201cZero Waste: The conservation of all resources by means of responsible production, consumption, reuse, and recovery of products, packaging, and materials without burning and with no discharges to land, water, or air that threaten the environment or human health.\u201d\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-65bc0c1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"65bc0c1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The 5 R strategy<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6e36de7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6e36de7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The zero waste approach offers an alternative to waste management consisting in systematically using new resources to replace those lost (buried or incinerated). This strategy also aims to drastically reduce the pollution generated by conventional waste management processes; it is based on the principles of 5 R:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Refuse: what you don\u2019t need \/ single-use items \/ non-reusable items.<\/li>\n<li>Reduce: do not over-consume \/ over-pack.<\/li>\n<li>Reuse: reuse items \/ lease, borrow, secondhand items, etc\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Recycle: recycle reusable objects and materials.<\/li>\n<li>Rot: rot the rest and give it back to the earth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-196bdf2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"196bdf2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"234\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.ricova.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/concept-5-R.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-3543\" alt=\"5 R concept\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.ricova.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/concept-5-R.jpg 780w, https:\/\/dev.ricova.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/concept-5-R-600x180.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dev.ricova.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/concept-5-R-300x90.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev.ricova.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/concept-5-R-768x230.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-81ca33a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"81ca33a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Zero waste in Quebec<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-04ed043 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"04ed043\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Since 2015, the movement has grown in popularity in Quebec, citizens have gathered and created associations such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aqzd.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Association qu\u00e9b\u00e9coise Z\u00e9ro D\u00e9chet<\/strong><\/span><\/a> (AQZD), to raise awareness about waste reduction, decrease consummation, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Large grocery chains such as Metro and IGA are also beginning to follow the movement by banning plastic grocery bags and accepting reusable consumer containers.<\/p>\n<p>The individual approach of zero waste is taking on a collective dimension.
