Would you leave a faucet running day and night? Probably not. And yet, without realizing it, that’s exactly what we do through our digital habits. Our online presence, though seemingly intangible, relies on an infrastructure that consumes vast amounts of energy, leaving behind a significant ecological footprint.

While we pay close attention to physical waste, the invisible waste generated by our digital consumption often goes unnoticed. It lurks in every unnecessary email stored, every device left on standby, and every redundant internet search. At a business scale, these seemingly small actions become an energy sinkhole. Yet, it is entirely possible to act effectively, without compromising productivity, through simple and mindful adjustments.

A Heavier Footprint Than We Imagine

Behind every click, a server runs, data centers operate, and algorithms process billions of requests. Often, this energy is spent on actions as trivial as an unread email sitting in an inbox or an idle browser tab. The impact is underestimated, but the numbers speak for themselves:

  • Stored emails: A single email left in storage for a year can generate up to 20 grams of CO₂. Now multiply that by the billions of emails stored globally, and the impact becomes staggering.

    • Video calls: A one-hour video conference can emit up to 150 grams of CO₂, roughly equivalent to driving 1 km in a car. Given the millions of hours spent on virtual meetings every day, the resulting carbon footprint is immense.

      • Standby devices: Office devices left on standby for a year consume an average of 200 kWh of energy, enough to power a refrigerator for the same period. Across thousands of businesses, this unnecessary energy drain becomes colossal.

        Ricova: A Vision Beyond Recycling

At Ricova, we understand that waste isn’t limited to physical materials. It also includes inefficient energy consumption and digital excess. Reducing our digital footprint is an integral part of our broader mission to eliminate waste in all its forms.

To address this, we have implemented several concrete initiatives to curb unnecessary energy use:

        • Turning off unused devices to eliminate phantom energy consumption.

          • Optimizing display settings for energy efficiency, an easy yet impactful solution.

A Collective Effort for Lasting Impact

We believe that real change comes through collective awareness. Reducing digital waste means adopting more responsible habits, step by step. Every company can refine its digital practices and contribute to a more sustainable energy consumption model, without compromising performance.

The shift toward responsible energy consumption isn’t a burden; it’s an opportunity to develop smarter habits that, when compounded, create tangible change. By acknowledging these invisible waste streams, every business can take a simple yet meaningful step toward a more responsible energy future.

So, what small action can you take today to be part of this necessary shift?
